The Little House Books

Most all kids read The Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Some still are not aware she was a real person and not just made up. Her books were written between 1931 and 1943. Her daughter, Rose Wilder Lane was also a writer. . The Little House books were even banned once because of racism. I 200, CBS aired a move called "Beyond the Prairie": The Real Life of Laura Ingalls Wilder" and a sequel in 2002. There are vast differences in her actual life and the books. The books are classified historical fiction since the stories are based on Wilder's life.

Some characters were a combination of people she knew. There was a Nellie but her last name was Owens and her family really owned a general store and she had a brother named Willie. The parents were Margaret and William. Laura changed the name to Olsen in the books. It is believed the Nellie character in the book was also based on two other girls Genevieve  Masterson and Stella Gilbert. Laura did not get along with Genevieve and Stella was a girl who went riding with her and Almanzo . Carries' birthplace was Kansas and not the Big Woods. The little brother that died is not mentioned in the books because she thought it too harsh for children. Anyway, the books are still enjoyed though she left out many details..
